‘Oasis’ venue seeks bands for annual competition

The Packhorse’ in Levenshulme which was once the favorite haunt of the chart topping South Manchester band ‘Oasis’ is once again host this years Boddingtons ‘YGG Unsigned 2007’ as part of this years Manchester Irish Festival www.manchesteririshfestival.co.uk

Boddingtons ‘YGG Unsigned’ is the festivals annual search for the next chart topping Rock band with Irish roots. The competition with a £1,000 worth of prizes was by founded by the award winning Irish promotions company ‘Young, Gifted & Green’. A demo tape from a then unknown Irish Mancunian band called 'Oasis' led the company to organise this annual event which aims to uncover the next world conquering super group.

Since starting the competition the company has invested close to twenty thousand pounds in supporting new bands on the rocky road to stardom and just over four hundred bands have been showcased in the event.
Manchester has a rich history of bands with Irish roots, as well as ‘Oasis’ other chart topping bands with Irish roots include ‘The Smiths’, ‘Morrisey’, ‘The Stone Roses’ and ‘Happy Mondays’. Morrisey even named one of his albums ‘Irish Blood English Heart’ as a testament to his Irish background.

The three hundred capacity Packhorse Pub celebrates its centenary next year and this is just one of the many events it has planned to celebrate its one hundred years of existence. It has recently undergone a major refurbishment to convert it into a purpose built late night entertainment center hosting regular Live Music, Comedy and Club nights. Venue owner Lawrence Hennigan said “I do not know whether Liam and Noel will recognise the venue now, but I think they would approve the fact that we are keeping the live music alive in the area. They are more than welcome to pop in for a drink anytime they are passing through.”

‘YGG unsigned’ is now in its twelfth year and regularly attracts entries from all over the UK and Ireland. Bands entering the competition must have at least one member of the group with Irish roots (parents or grandparents). It is open to any musical style but all bands must be over 18.

The event organiser Tony Hennigan said “The inspiration behind the competition was from a demo tape from a then unknown local Irish Mancunian band called 'Oasis'. The tape is now in the club’s musical archives and the rest as they say is Rock n Roll history. It seems appropriate to stage this years heats and final in the venue where ‘Oasis’ spent most of their youth. The regulars still get VIP tickets for the bands homecoming gigs. Some of the World’s biggest Music stars such as U2, The Corrs, Westlife, Ash, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, Badly Drawn Boy and The Doves, all have Irish roots and we want to continue to support the next generation of superstars.”

Heats start in December 2006 and continue into the new year, with the final taking place on St Patrick’s eve the 16th March 2007. Bands wishing to enter the competition can contact the competition Hotline on 0161 225 0706 or email rockfest24@hotmail.com or visit the website www.24rockfest.com. They should also send a demo and biog to YGG Unsigned 908 Stockport Road, Levenshulme, Manchester, M19 3BF

Competition's history

In previous years the heats were held at the Manchester's famous Boardwalk, the same venue that discovered 'Oasis'. The competition has now outgrown the Boardwalk since people without advance tickets had to be turned away. Oasis drummer Tony McCarroll has been one of the competition’s previous sponsors. "I just to put something back into the community. I know how hard it can be for young bands starting off and if I can offer them a little help along the way- I'm happy." "My parents come from Tyrone and Offaly so was delighted to help sponsor the competition in the Irish festival".

YGG Background

Young, Gifted & Green (YGG) was established in 1995 to promote the very best of the UK’s Irish Music, Comedy and Dance talent. One of the companies previous dancers is the three times World champion ‘James Keegan’. James is now the principal dancer with the world famous ‘Lord of the Dance’ show. On the Comedy side it has promoted the likes of the award winning Irish Comedians ‘Ardal O’Hanlon’ and ‘Peter Kay’. Finally the Irish musical acts it has worked with include BBC Radio 2’s instrumentalist of the Year ‘Mike McGoldrick’, along with Sharon Shannon and Davey Spillane of ‘Riverdance’ fame.

To raise funds parishioners at the Levenshulme Baptist Church staged a car wash, using the church's leftover holy water.

An old story, from May this year, which I missed first time:

Members of a Manchester church are cleaning cars with Holy water. In an attempt to be environmentally friendly and serve the community, church attendees will use the water from the morning’s Baptismal service to wash local vehicles.

Whilst Googling for information on the Levenshulme Festival I came across this blog, Mancubist, which links to Levenshulme Life.
Levenshulme Life is still very much a blog in progress (aren't they all?)...
Special credit to the author of Mancubist as they write:

I’m a big fan of the South Manchester suburb of Levenshulme. It’s home to several great second-hand shops and community radio station All FM, which has a few great alternative shows. If I could afford to buy a house, I’d probably buy one there.

Jobs may go as Somerfield axed

Following up an earlier post re: the closure of Somerfield in Levenshulme I read the following taken from the North East Manchester Advertiser.

The article outlines the closure of Somerfield with the loss of 20 jobs and the impact on the local community.

MORE than 20 jobs could be axed after Somerfield announced it was to close its Levenshulme branch - just three months after opening.

Supermarket bosses decided to close the branch because profit margins had plummeted as locals prefer to shop at discount stores.

A spokeswoman for Somerfield said the store would close on or before October 21.

The Chase

Whilst searching Levenshulme on YouTube I came across this video by Levenshulme band the Chase.
I saw the Chase at (I think) the now closed Palace Nightclub in a "Battle of the Bands" competition.
I don't know if the band won their heat or even the competition but looks like they are still going strong...

Time Out Manchester

As a side note what do people think of the new Time Out Manchester? Apparently it will launch in full early next year.
Whilst it seems a shame that a London based organisation is launching a listings magazine for the city of Manchester there is a gap left by the Guardian Media Group's closure of CITY LIFE magazine in December last year.
I notice that, in prepraration for Time Out's Manchester launch, the Manchester Evening News has rebranded its Friday evening entertainment supplement as CITY LIFE.
But is this a real substitute for a proper listings magazine for a city like Manchester?

That Cafe mention in Time Out Manchester

Levenshulme's That Cafe gets a mention in the preview issue of Time Out Manchester.
In the Food and Drink section the magazine highlights "30 great Manchester restaurants".
Under the "City classics" heading the magazine writes:
That Café
1031 Stockport Road, Levenshulme, M19 2TB (432 4672/www.thatcafe.co.uk). Bus 192. Tue-Sat 6-10.30pm, Sun noon-2.30pm; £40.
The name undersells this south Manchester venture (this isn’t eggs, chips and beans territory), but who needs savvy branding when your food is as good as this? The menu changes weekly, and generally features assured dishes such as venison carpaccio and home-reared pork chops with crackling. Drawing inspirations and flavours from around the world, the cooking is generally superb.
You can read the full article online here.

Somerfield: Supermarket Swap Part Two

I heard rumours that the Somerfield supermarket on Stockport Road was due to close a few months ago.
It now seems that the store (which was previously a Kwik Save and was rebranded a few months ago) is to close this month.

Iceland: Supermarket Swap Part One

A few months ago Iceland, on Stockport Road, changed its name to Cool Trader.
Now I hear that the store is going to revert back to its previous name?
If you know any more I'd be interested to hear your comments...

Codys now A6 Coffee Bar

There has been a change of owners down at Codys Coffee bar (on Stockport Road, opposite the Antiques Village).
The coffee bar has changed its name to the A6 Coffee Bar. The menu seems to have changed, with food on offer including the likes of all day "gut busting" breakfast (with a veggie option available for £3.50 including tea or coffee).
What do people think of the change?

The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash Klondyke Club, 13th October

The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash
+Randy Burk and Chirizo and The Frantic Driver
Friday 13th October @ The Klondyke Club, Levenshulme- £10 adv Doors 7.30pm
Mark Stuart formed the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash on a whim, by accident, by chance. He’d been in a punk rock band but that was done, over, finished, and it had nearly finished him. He had a dream one night, and out of the dream came a band name: the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash. The new name was a joke, sort of. And yet, soon enough, it wasn’t a joke anymore. Soon enough, it was a band, and soon enough, it was enough of a band that Johnny Cash himself gave them his personal seal of approval, and Johnny Cash’s own legitimate son helped produce their first album.

The 3.3D Holographic Zero Point Energy Disclosure Project

@ The Klondyke Club in Levenshulme, Manchester on Oct 14th is being headlined by one of the fathers of psychedelic and prog rock music, Kevin Ayers. Kevin was the founder of The Soft Machine, one ofBritains first underground psyche/prog rock groups and the band whichgave rise to the whole Canterbury scene of bands such as Gong,Caravan, National Health and countless others. The original SoftMachine is often associated with Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd as theyfrequently played together in the heyday of London's psychedelic era.Hendrix was a fan too as he chose the Softs to accompany the Hendrix experience on their first US tour. As a solo artist Kevin has worked with Briano Eno, Mike Oldfield, Steve Hillage, Lol Coxhill and John
Cale.

He is supported by some local acts who happen to be two of the bestmodern day psychedelic-influenced bands: Say Jansfield and samandtheplants. Say Jansfield hail from Nelson and their leader, Jay Stansfield, was in John Peel and Manchester underground faves EleMenT (later tRANSELEMENt) who played on the Peel show a number of times and have fans worldwide. samandtheplants are a highly eclectic Rochdale-based band signed to Twisted Nerve records who recently
opened for the Incredible String Band at the Moseley folk festival.

The name of the event is an attempt to raise public awareness of the holographic universe theory, the upcoming (2011/2012) dimensional shift and the suppresion/lack of development funding for free, clean (so called 'zero point') energy devices- the availability of which would help fight poverty, pollution and the energy crisis.
See http://cheniere.org for more info on the latter.

Tickets are £12.50 and are available from http://www.ticketline.co.uk/ or 0870 444 5556

If you are putting an event on in Levenshulme drop us a line.
In the meantime here is a video of Washington DC based band The Evens (fronted by legendary punk singer Ian Mackaye) playing a gig at the Klondyke...
Unfortunately I missed it! :(
