Irish Festival

It's Manchester Irish Festival and there are a whole load of events taking place in Levenshulme and across the city.

You can pick up a Going Irish Festival brochure at venues across the city or check out the website for details: http://www.goingirish.com/

Who's Looking After Levenshulme?

Following the closure of Somerfield (formerly Kwik Save) on Stockport Road and the demolition of the Community Centre on Chapel Street (issues I've documented on this blog) a group of residents are campaigning to see improvements in shopping and community facilities in the area.

They've even drawn up plans of how the area around the former Somerfield might look.

You can find out more, including details of an event at the Somerfield site on Saturday 10th March and a meeting called by the South Manchester Regeneration team on Wednesday 14th March on the website: http://levenshulme.wetpaint.com where you can sign the petition.

Morrissey/ Smiths night...

Whenever conversation turns to famous folk from Levenshulme after the fact that Arthur Lowe (of Dad's Army fame) attended Chapel Street Primary School things get a bit sketchy...

A few times I've seen posted that two members of the Smiths live/ lived in Levenshulme.
As I've not seen Steven Patrick Morrissey in Netto I guess this must mean one of the other three?

Anyway, after that rambling introduction, this Friday sees Irish Blood, English Heart a tribute to The Smiths club night:

The Pack Horse, Stockport Road, Levenshulme

8pm – Free

Indie Irish DJ James H dusts off his collection of hits by second generation Irish band ‘The Smiths’ on the anniversary of their break up twenty years ago. Plus hits from ‘Morrisey’, ‘Oasis’, ‘Badly Drawn Boy’ and other Manchester bands with Irish roots.

The event is part of the Manchester Irish Festival: More information on the Going Irish website

Let's get this show on the (Stockport) Road...

It's been a while since I last posted.
Maybe I've been spending too much time stuck in front of the telly looking out for Levenshulme on Life on Mars?
BTW, via the Levenshulme Life mySpace site (where you can ALL be my friends) I was informed that Levenshulme got a mention on Coronation Street...
Anyway a few posts coming up today about lots of diffferent things...

Life on Mars...

I've been a bit slow to catch on to Life on Mars, the BBC's police drama series, which is enjoying a repeat run on Freeview channel BBC4.

The Levenshulme connection?
Last summer a number of places in Levenshulme were used as film locations... so looking forward to the second series which I believe is due to air later this year...
